San Gimignano

Teruzzi is a winery with a very strong bond with its surrounding area, located in the heart of Tuscany, at the foot of San Gimignano. Amidst art, legends and history, today the municipality of San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts a splendid winemaking tradition: the medieval village is located in the Sienese countryside, the birthplace of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the White Queen in a land of red wines.

Wine is culture, passion, and involvement, and a glass of Vernaccia di San Gimignano encloses centuries of history, tradition, work and commitment.

Riserva Sant'elena

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG Riserva

The nose is intense, complex, and broad. Hints of white flowers and citrus fruits blend perfectly with the mineral notes typical of the variety. History

Past and future

It is said that San Gimignano was founded in 63 B.C. when Muzio and Silvio, two brothers, young patricians and accomplices of Catilina, fled Rome and found refuge in Valdelsa. Here, they built two castles called Mucchio and Silvia, the future San Gimignano.

In the 10th century, with the end of the Early Middle Ages, the City established itself and became what is now the oldest nucleus of the historic centre. During the three centuries after the year 1000, San Gimignano continued to expand. Politically, it was a feud of the bishop of Volterra, who resided in a castle on Poggio della Torre. What in 998 was still a village grew by taking advantage of its strategic geographic position on the Via Francigena.

As far back as 1200, documents within the Ordinamenti della Gabella del Comune prove the flourishing trade of a grape variety called Vernaccia. This white wine, with its characteristic pale straw-yellow colour tending to golden, its fine aroma and dry flavour with a bitterish aftertaste, has constantly evolved, in the vineyard as well as in the cellar, so much so that in 1993 it became the first Tuscan white wine to be awarded the Denominazione di Origine Controllata.

Teruzzi is the contemporary enhancement of this ancient Tuscan history and its centuries-old tradition. In 1974, Enrico Teruzzi, an engineer by profession but a winemaker by vocation, founded the winery with the help of his wife Carmen in the enchanting setting of San Gimignano. In 2016, Terra Moretti acquired the winery. Today, they continue Teruzzi’s path of innovation and tradition, leading the winery’s viticulture to achieve important goals while respecting sustainability.

Sustainability

Nature at the core

Nature, before it becomes wine, is placed at the centre of the entire production process. Ever since Teruzzi was founded, everyone’s commitment has been directed towards enhancing Vernaccia di San Gimignano with an approach that combines a strong, innovative spirit with constant attention to sustainability. Among the best practices in the vineyard and cellar, chemical fertilisers have been abolished over time and pesticides reduced by 50%. In addition, the practice of green manure has been adopted to enrich the soil in a natural way, while soil management has been oriented towards conservative techniques, using marc and stalk waste to produce compost.

There is more to sustainability, however, than the environment. Economic and social sustainability are equally important. Thanks to adopting good practices and preparing the Sustainability Report, Teruzzi has been certified as a Sustainable Organisation by Equalitas since 2022. A certification that assesses the sustainable approach of a winery in all its activities, and thus in the three areas of environmental, social and economic sustainability. It is the first step in a long journey with the aim of always improving, with the involvement of every person and every action taken in the vineyard. At 360 degrees.
